Floods

I remember being home during a flood with my mom and sister dad was at work . Mom was scared to death she was their when her father died saving two women from drowning . Grandpa was a very young man when he died .

Being home alone with mom during the flood

I remember the house was not even bolted together at the time it was just sitting on cinder blocks up in the air . Other peoples fuel tanks from their houses had washed away and hit the side of the house all night long .

Dad was at work in Dayton at National Cash Register company boy was it scary mom didn't sleep all night she walked the floor .

The people in Texas

Had much deeper water they were on the roofs of the houses ours were are house set probaly only got 4 to 5 feet deep that doesn't mean it wasn't deeper at other places .That is how deep it was down by the house .

My dad showed up the next day

When dad got home he had to park the car about a 1/4 of a mile away and swim home . Then he went looking for a boat to get us out of the flood .

When mom saw him she insisted on making him breakfast before we went on the trip down the road in a row boat to a neighbors to stay until the flood ended .

Floods are always scary

Even for people who didn't watch their father drown like Ethel Mildred Stephens Wortman who watched her father die . So I know their were alot of scared people in Texas .The rescuers should at least recieve some kind of medal even though most of them didn't die saving someone else . The families they saved will remember it for years to come . I am sure when the toil is taken up yonder the good they did will be counted against the bad they have done and alot of them will go to the head of the line to get into heaven because God will say they deserved it for saving other people when they could have died .

This was not Texas this was little Miami river in waynesville Ohio around 55 years ago

But it still lives in my mind as if it were yesterday . Dad got a boat he walked and swimmed with the boat and got us down the road in a rowboat it was scary . Mom was really scared after seeing her father, Richard Stephens, die she never went in water up past her ankles .

Who knows what would have happened if dad won't have showed up and saved us when he did but the house stayed together until the end of the flood .I guess we would have had to stay their till the water went down and it did go down.

People who cared

People who cared risked their lives to save other people from drowning in Texas real American heroes people our country should look up to . We only see the bad people on T. V. why not make a movie and have our unsung heroes in it the firemen the policemen the garbage collector , real people who care doing real things that benifit real people .
